This byway, linking Hyatttville and Greybull, was once inhabited by Paleo-Indian mammoth hunters more than 12,000 years ago. Native American petroglyphs are visible at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site, just a short drive off Alkali Road.
A striking feature of the byway is the Sheepherder Monuments, piles of rocks constructed by idle sheepherders during the 1800s and early 1900s.
You can explore the red hills of the unique geological Chugwater formation, formed 230 million years ago when Wyoming was covered by ocean.
The 32-mile byway is a maintained gravel and dirt road that can be driven from May to September by two-wheel-drive vehicles with a 10-inch clearance.
The byway is administered by the Salmon BLM Field Office. For more information, call or write them at 1206 South Challis St. Salmon ID 83467.
