A vast network of caves is hidden along the slopes of the Bighorn and Absaroka mountain ranges. Located near the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, this area also includes spectacular canyons and great hiking
and prime rock-climbing country.
The caves are rich in formations, passages and paleontological resources.
Two of the caves, Horsethief and Spirit Mountain, are gated and managed under a permit system administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Cody Field Office.
Individuals who are interested in visiting the caves need
to obtain a permit application form and key from the Cody Field Office; parties visiting the caves must have an experienced trip leader.
Due to the fragile and non-renewable nature of cave resources, a few of the caves have been closed to the public to protect their outstanding values for scientific research.
