The fossils found here are among the most perfectly preserved in the world.
Fossil Butte National Monument tells the story of a 50-million-year-old subtropical lake ecosystem. The history of this ecosystem can be explored at the visitor center displays or along hiking trails in this high desert park. A 2.5-mile trail leads to a historic fossil quarry, and a 1.5-mile trail winds through the high desert ecosystem.
Elevations range from 6,600 to more than 8,000 feet.
Camping is not permitted in the monument, but is allowed on surrounding Bureau of Land Management land.
Lodging and restaurant facilities are located 15 miles east of the monument in Kemmerer.
