The Flambeau River State Forest is a working woodland, where outdoor activities take place alongside commercial wood harvesting.
The North and South forks of the Flambeau River churn together here. The South Fork provides excellent white water for paddling and rafting. There is limited access points and no campsites. The calmer stretches of the North Fork are good for canoeing, with 14 canoe camping areas.
Overnight visitors find 59 campsites at two campgrounds. Backpack camping is also available, by permit only.
Several miles of trails traverse the forest, providing hikers with 24 miles of north woods to explore. The Flambeau Hills trail has 16 miles of groomed cross-country skiing available in the winter.
There are more than 40 miles of snowmobile trails, and about 30 miles of trails are open to all terrain vehicles from May 15 to Nov. 15. Horses are allowed on forest roads, but not on hiking and biking trails.
Boating and lake fishing are popular, with plentiful stocks of bass, muskie and walleye. There are swimming areas at Lake of the Pines and Connors Lake.
