Traversing mountains, farmland and the Great Lakes shoreline, this trail weaves through seven northern states from Crown Point, N.Y., to Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota where it joins the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.
Hiking is the primary activity, but some segments are used by cross-country skiers in winter.
While the trail was originally planned for 3,200 miles, federal officials now predict the trail will be closer to 4,200 miles in length. To date, 2,000 miles of trail are completed.
There are backcountry campsites, campgrounds in forests and parks, and cabins and lean-tos along the trail.
Mountain biking and horseback riding are restricted to only a few sections of the trail.
The North Country Trail Assoc., a volunteer group, builds and maintains the trails and publishes detailed maps of the entire trail. To contact the association for information or maps, write to them at 229 East Main St., Lowell, Mich., 49331-1711.
