Horicon National Wildlife Refuge offers many opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and environmental education.
Due to a diversity of habitats within the refuge, including wetlands, river, grasslands, and small woodlots, numerous species may be seen feeding and resting. Seasonal inhabitants include over 268 species of birds, such as Canada geese, redhead ducks, blue-winged teal, and sandhill cranes and also muskrats, river otters, and white-tailed deer.
Recreational facilities for the public to enjoy include the Horicon TernPike Auto Tour Route; Redhead, Egret, Red Fox, and Bud Cook hiking trails; and several fishing piers and wildlife observation areas located throughout the refuge.
Public use areas are open during daylight hours only and are open year-round, conditions permitting. Please call for conditions.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by the visitor center, located on Hwy. Z near Mayville. The visitor center is free of charge and open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and open weekends in the fall.
Browse through marsh exhibits, Coot’s Corner gift shop and enjoy the view from spotting scopes overlooking the marsh. Educational programs are offered seasonally.
