This 1,000-acre park on Lake Michigan encompasses a wide area of beaches, sand dunes, wetlands and forests, all only four miles from the city of Sheboygan.
There is a magnificent 2.5-mile beach for swimming, windsurfing and beachcombing. Prehistoric and Native American artifacts have been found along the park’s shifting dunes and beaches.
Lake Michigan contains dozens of species of fish, and sport fishing in this area. Dock facilities and fishing charters are available within a short distance of the park.
Campers enjoy 106 modern, wooded family campsites, 49 of which have electricity. Some are wheelchair accessible. Campground facilities include flush toilets, showers and laundry facilities.
There are two tent-only group campsites that accommodate 50 people.
Picnic areas are situated throughout the park, along with a children’s play area, a summer concession and a bathhouse in the beach area.
The park’s Sanderling Nature Center offers a variety of nature exhibits. Interpretive programs are presented in a 100-seat auditorium and an outdoor amphitheater. The center is open daily from May 1 to Sept. 30 and on weekends during spring and fall.
The park has five trails, including a two-mile trail that traverses natural dunes areas and a 2.5-mile horseback and hiking trail along the Black River. There is also a quarter-mile boardwalk over a river marsh.
Large numbers of migrating birds follow Lake Michigan's shoreline in spring and fall, and raptors, falcons, hawks and eagles are often seen. During fall migration, many ducks can be seen from shore.
The park is popular with winter campers and offers 2.5 miles of marked, groomed cross-country ski trails.
