The Leopold District manages 48 Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) covering 12,000 acres in 17 southeastern Wisconsin counties. The district also manages 45 privately-owned conservation easements preserving marsh and woodlands covering 3,000 acres in 33 eastern Wisconsin counties.
The waterfowl nesting areas, usually marshland surrounded by grassland, also provide habitat for a variety of other wildlife species, such as shorebirds, wading birds, mink, muskrat, beaver and deer.
The district sites are open to wildlife observation, photography, hunting, and environmental education. People with disabilities may reserve a waterfowl hunting blind at the Uihlein and Schoenberg WPAs.
Most areas are open seasonally to public hunting, trapping and fishing.
