The heart of the Gauley recreation area is the mighty Gauley River.

This ever-tumultuous river becomes a roaring wild beast during five four-day weekends followed by one two-day weekend in autumn when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers drains Summersville Lake down to a winter puddle. Rafters come from all over the world to experience the challenge of the Gauley.

Twenty-five miles of the free-flowing Gauley River and six miles of the Meadow River pass through gorges and valleys. The Gauley contains several Class V rapids, making it one of the most adventurous white-water boating rivers in the East.

Both rivers provide excellent fishing opportunities.

The main access point to the Gauley River is at Summersville Dam off Rt. 19. Another access point for hikers is Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park off Rt. 129, which has a scenic overlook and hiking trails.

There is a primitive, free campground at the tailwaters of Summersville Dam, at the downstream end of the parking lot.

Hunting is allowed, but limited since the recreation area includes little federally-owned land along the Gauley.
