Bluestone State Park in southern West Virginia sits beside the state's second-largest lake, Bluestone Lake.
The lake, at 2,000 acres, has an excellent sport fishery, producing bluegills, large- and smallmouth bass, hybrid bass, crappie and catfish. Boaters and waterskiers also use the lake, and rental boats and canoes are available.
Other water recreation in the region includes whitewater rafting and canoeing on the nearby New River Gorge National River. A swimming pool and a wading area for young children are open Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend.
The state park embraces more than 2,100 acres of mountainous, heavily wooded terrain. It adjoins another 17,632 acres of public land in the Bluestone Wildlife Management Area.
The wildlife management area adjacent to the park is open to hunting for deer, wild turkeys and small game. It has some 300 primitive campsites, boat launch facilities, an equestrian facilities (bring your own horses), and more than 100 miles of dirt roads for hiking and mountain biking.
The state park has eight miles of hiking-only trails, several of which have fine panoramic views.
The park has 32 improved campsites, including 22 with electricity and four that are wheelchair-accessible, plus 47 rustic sites and a group tenting area. There are 26 modern cabins and a trailer dump station.
