Located 13 miles southeast of Colville, the 40,198-acre Little Pend Oreille refuge is home to large mammals, including white-tailed deer, moose, elk and black bear.The refuge also hosts a wide variety of birdlife, principally upland, riparian and forest species.
Mountain and forested habitat is interspersed with grasslands.There are scattered cultivated tracts, eight small lakes and many miles of mountain streams.Three of the lakes can be fished.
While hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are permitted, there are no marked trails.
The refuge is open year-round, however during winter there is no maintenance and gates are closed on most interior roads.
