The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, situated in the southeastern corner of Virginia, provides a valuable sanctuary for migrating and wintering waterfowl, particularly the greater snow goose.

The 9,200-acre refuge encompasses a barrier island and coastline along the Atlantic coast. Habitats include beach, dunes, marsh and woodlands.

The refuge also provides habitat for loggerhead sea turtles, piping plovers, peregrine falcons and bald eagles.

Two boardwalks lead to the beach. The Bay Trail, Environmental Study Area, and portions of interior dikes are also open to visitors on foot or bicycle.

A controlled hunt for white-tailed deer and feral hog is held one week in October. Contact the refuge office for details.

Areas are designated for visitors to fish in the ocean and in the freshwater. A license is required for those over age 16.

An electric tram service is provided for a fee through the refuge to neighboring False Cape State Park from April through October.

An entry fee is charged from April 1 to Oct. 31.
