Visitors fish, hike, hunt, picnic and canoe on the historic James River in this park.
The park features 1,500 acres of rolling farm meadows, quiet forest and beautiful mountain vistas, as well as three miles of frontage along the James River.
There are 13 primitive campsites along the river and seven tent sites by scenic Branch Pond. Group and equestrian camping is also available. Red Oak Campground has 31 water and electric sites, with services on the grounds. The park offers climate-controlled 2, 3, or 6-bedroom cabins.
Hikers, bikers and equestrians savor the 17 miles of multiple use trails. Other facilities include three fishing ponds, picnic shelters, a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier and trail, and two boat launch facilities.
James River Park Outdoor Adventures (434-933-8682) offers full canoe livery services. It also rents canoes, kayaks, tubes and bikes, and provides shuttle service.
