Gifford Woods State Park was established in 1931 and developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
The Appalachian Trail runs through the park. Many "through hikers" travel this route on their way from Georgia to Maine in spring or the reverse in fall. The Appalachian Trail joins the Long Trail about 1.5 miles from the campground.
The park's hardwoods explode with color in autumn.
Another unique feature of the park is a seven-acre stand of virgin hardwoods, one of the few old-growth forests remaining in Vermont. The stand is completely undeveloped to preserve its natural state.
In the summer months, Kent Pond, across Route 100 from the park, is a mecca for trout fishermen.
There are 27 tent and trailer sites and 21 lean-to campsites in the park. There is a trailer sanitary station but no hookups. A wooded picnic area has a playground.
