Brighton State Park in Island Pond is known for its wilderness: mountains with tree-covered slopes, fast-running rivers and streams and clear lakes.
Much of the land near Island Pond is especially suited to the fisherman, hunter or outdoor lover and is virtually without paved roads or towns.
There are many logging roads reaching deep into the wilderness, and they offer interesting side trips to the bicyclist and hiker.
The town of Island Pond had its heyday decades ago when the railroad from Montreal to Portland, Maine, connected the town to the world. Railroad men and loggers once roamed its streets.
The town's railroading heritage is still evident today in the remaining train station and other railroad structures.
The campground skirts the mostly undeveloped Spectacle Pond, where it is common to hear loons calling at night. There are 61 tent and trailer sites and 23 lean-tos.There are restrooms with hot showers and a sanitary dump station.
Park facilities include hiking trails, beach, nature museum, bathhouse and playground.
