With 400,000 acres and more than 900 miles of trails stretching over two-thirds the length of Vermont, the Green Mountain National Forest offers a wide variety of recreation opportunities for all ages and skill levels.

Many back roads weave through the forest, providing access for foliage viewers, blueberry pickers, cross-country skiers, hikers, campers, snowmobilers, anglers, hunters and cyclists.

The legendary Appalachian Trail and Long Trail run through the forest and there is a network of shelters spaced a day's hike apart.

Among the wildlife in the forest are black bears, moose, deer, beaver, peregrine falcons, pine martens and migratory songbirds.

Ranger stations are in Manchester, Rochester and Middlebury. The forest's headquarters are in Rutland.

There are 101,000 acres of wilderness areas, one popular trails is the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail and Wayside off Route 125.

The Green Mountain National Forest is a "working" forest and has 16 watersheds that supply community drinking water. There are 24 ponds and lakes with 920 miles of streams and rivers, two historical fire towers, and many cultural features.
