New Discovery State Park is part of Groton State Forest, one of the largest landholdings by the state of Vermont. The park has an extensive network of multi-use year-round trails that pass through bogs and forests and crest mountain summits.
Once logged extensively, the forest is dominated by red maple and yellow birch and is a riot of colors in the fall.
The forest is home to black bear, mink, loon and heron. There are ponds and brooks for fishing, developed campgrounds, several hiking trails and an abandoned railroad bed that provides excellent mountain biking.
Developed campgrounds, includes sites accessible to wheelchairs, are open seasonally and remote lean-tos offer remote camping year-round.
Hiking trails are popular with cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Mountain bikes are not permitted on hiking trails but are allowed on forest gravel roads.
There are horse trails and campsites.
Route 232, which runs from Route 302 near Groton to Route 2 near Marshfield, is the primary access route to the park.
Stillwater, Ricker and Big Deer state parks and Boulder Beach day use area also are within Groton State Forest. Those camping at New Discovery may use the facilities at Boulder Beach.
