Made famous in naturalist Terry Tempest Williams' book Refuge, the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is host to millions of migratory birds representing more than 200 species.
Bands placed on birds at the Bear River refuge help biologists chart the movements of migratory birds. The duck bands from Bear River have been found in 31 states and in Siberia, Russia and South America.
The new wildlife education center features state-of-the-art exhibits and displays on birds, a .5 mile wheelchair accessible walking trail, and an observation deck.
A 12-mile auto tour route, also used by cyclists, is open year-round, conditions permitting.
A fishing pier, pavilion and restrooms, all wheelchair-accessible, have been rebuilt at the River Delta Interpretive Site. Other areas of the refuge are closed to the public except during designated hunting seasons. A boat launch is available during hunting season only.
