Only adventurous travelers should embark on this historic 90-mile route of the first transcontinental railroad.
The Backcountry Byway begins at the Golden Spike National Historic Site west of Brigham City. Following the railway, which was completed in 1869, it journeys through remnants of railroad camps, towns and trestles.
There are interpretive signs at points of interest, as well as a visitor center and museum at the historic site.
The terrain is rugged and there are no water sources, so carry spare tires and pack plenty of water.
There are no established campgrounds, but visitors can camp along the byway. Do not bike in fragile areas where off-road vehicles are prohibited.
Do not disturb historic sites.
The byway is administered by the Bureau of Land Management's Salt Lake Field Office.
