A vast area whose 299,008 acres include desert, mountains, canyons and the Rio Grande, Big Bend is among Texas' most frequented state parks.
Recreation opportunities include backcountry hiking, river rafting, biking, camping, birdwatching and fishing.
Big Bend is home to a tremendous diversity of animal and plant species, including 14 species of bats, several species of hummingbirds, and at least 11 other rare plants and animals, including Hinckley oaks and mountain lions.
The park also maintains a small Texas longhorn herd, a remnant of the property's ranching heritage.
Programs offered include a longhorn cattle drive, trail rides, and workshops on desert survival, desert plants and photography.
The river-centered park makes a green ribbon through the harsh Chihuahuan Desert, covering 400 square miles.
Unique geological formations were formed by folded rock layers and volcanic domes. Visitors can also trace 10,000 years of human occupation in the region.
The park offers 17 miles of mountain bike trails and 30 miles of gravel road. The Visitor Center at Sauceda offers mountain bikes for rent.
The River Road-FM 170 parallels the Rio Grande with 25 miles of paved road, which is ideal for touring bikes. The River Road also hosts the trailheads to a 19 mile multi-use trail system.
