This remote, 196-mile stretch of river, administered by Big Bend National Park, extends from Mariscal Canyon in the park to the Terrell-Val Verde county line in Texas.
Canoeing and rafting are possible year-round. Two canyons inside the park, Mariscal and Boquillas, are considered easy to navigate, but the Lower Canyons, with few takeout points and no facilities, present a backcountry challenge.
There are visitor centers and campgrounds in Big Bend National Park, but none in the Lower Canyons. Backcountry camping is permitted in the Lower Canyons.
A permit, available at any ranger station, is required for river trips in the park or on the Wild and Scenic River.
