The refuge serves the Tall Grass Prairie flock of Canada geese, snow, Ross's and white-fronted geese and other migratory birds, including ducks, shorebirds and colonial nesters.
Established in 1946, the refuge includes 3,000 acres of marsh and water and 8,000 acres of upland and farmland. The habitat includes lakeshore, ponds, uplands and prairies, as well as some excellent bottomland habitat.
Sightseeing on the auto tour route, fishing and hunting are some of the public uses. No boats are allowed on the refuge from Sept. 30 to April 1, but anglers may fish from the banks all year.
