This refuge provides excellent habitat for wintering migratory waterfowl and other birds. The 38,000 acre-refuge is in Brazoria and Matagorda counties, 12 miles west of Freeport.
The refuge includes coastal prairie, malt marsh and saltwater lakes, shallow freshwater lakes and marshes, intermittent streams and bottomland forests.
The refuge is a stop on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. The Cocklebur Slough Auto Tour is open daily during daylight hours. More than five miles of walking trails allow visitors to view a variety of wildlife and their habitats.
The area is a primary wintering site for Central Flyway waterfowl and coastal salt marshes are the ancestral winter grounds of lesser snow geese. These geese, along with smaller populations of Canada and white-fronted geese, reach peak numbers on the refuge during December and January.
Large numbers of ducks also winter here from October through March.
Song birds migrate through here during spring and fall, with the greatest concentrations in April and May.
The Hudson Woods United, located five miles west of Angleton, is open weekends only, but offers an excellent opportunity to view migrating songbirds in the bottomlands. More than three miles of hiking trails are available to explore this unique forest habitat and oxbow lakes.
