Cooper Lake State Park in northeast Texas has two units, Doctors Creek Unit in Delta County and the larger South Sulphur Unit in northern Hopkins County.

The 19,300-acre Cooper Lake is a young park. Embankment construction on the South Sulphur River began in 1986 and the parks opened in 1996.

South Sulphur features camping, fishing, waterskiing, picnicking, boating, unsupervised swimming, bird watching, nature programs and tours and equestrian camping and trails.

Anglers appreciate the six- and two-lane boat ramps, three fish cleaning tables and two lighted fishing piers.

Five miles of multi-use trails serve both hikers and mountain bikers. For equestrians there are eleven miles of trails.

A swimming beach is part of the 25.5 miles of shoreline. A playground, a pavilion and picnic sites with tables, grills and water are also available.

Campsites include those with water and electricity, walk-in tent sites with water, equestrian campsites with water and electricity and primitive camping. There are also cabins, screened shelters, and cottages.

The vegetation of Cooper Lake State Park is dominated by post oak and various native grass species. Other tree species include winged elm, bois d'ark, Texas sugarberry, eastern red cedar, roughleaf dogwood, eastern persimmon, American elm, honey locust and mesquite.

Most-frequently seen wildlife includes the swamp rabbit, eastern cottontail, nine-banded armadillo, white-tailed deer, coyote, bobcat, waterfowl, bald eagle, beaver, raccoon, and wild hog.
