Located in a spectacular scenic canyon created about 1 million years ago, Palo Duro Canyon State Park offers camping, horseback riding and horse rentals, hiking, geological and nature study, mountain biking and scenic drives.
The Old West Riding Stable offers guided day-long or half-day rides to the Lighthouse Rock Formation. Reservations are required.
Hikers and mountain bikers can choose from about 29 miles of trails.
Part of the Texas longhorn herd is kept in the canyon, and the park has a replica of a line shack used by the first commercial cattle ranch in the Texas Panhandle in 1876.
The visitor center offers exhibits on history, natural history and geology.
All of the beautiful stone buildings in the park were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. The Pioneer Amphitheater, built in 1963, is the scene of the summer production of the drama Texas.
Overnight accommodations range from seven housekeeping cabins to primitive backpacking sites as well as developed campgrounds. A primitive equestrian campsite is also available.
