The scenic, 13-mile paved road that winds between Buescher and nearby Bastrop State Park makes this area a favorite among experienced bikers. The road travels through a part of the lovely lost pines, a remnant of what is thought to have once been an extensive pine and oak forest covering much of central Texas during the Ice Age.
Photographers and nature watchers come to see 250 species of birds, as well as white-tailed deer, raccoons, opossums, bobcats and armadillos. About 7.7 miles of trails offer plenty of roaming room for hikers.
The well-stocked lake holds catfish, bass, crappie, perch and also rainbow trout in the winter. Canoes are available to enjoy the lake.
Located just north of Smithville in Bastrop County, the 1,017-acre park offer various camping and picnicking sites.
There are 65 campsites, 32 with water and electricity, three mini-cabins, four screened shelters, two group sites, and a group dining hall.
