Developed as a Tennessee Valley Authority demonstration park in the 1930s, Harrison Bay State Park is named for a large bay in Chickamauga Lake that covers the old town of Harrison.
Damming the Tennessee River also flooded the last Cherokee Campground, which was at this site.
Eight miles from the Chattanooga city limits, the park is a mecca for water recreation enthusiasts and campers.
One of the largest camping areas in the state park system, Harrison Bay has 163 campsites, all but 28 of them with water and electrical hookup.
Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. One campground is open all year. A camp store is open during the summer. A group camp is open from April to October.
The park has 25 miles of shoreline on huge Lake Chickamauga. Anglers fish for largemouth and striped bass, crappie, bream and catfish.
The park's marina is one of the stars of the state park system, thanks to its protected location, fine launch ramp and ample slip capacity.
The park's swimming pool is open during the summer.
Hikers and bikers use a 4.5-mile trail. A half-mile trail is for foot use only.
