Created during the violent earthquake of 1811, Reelfoot Lake offers a valuable wetland area that is a haven for many wildlife species. The refuge is a major stopover point and wintering area for waterfowl on the Mississippi Flyway.
Reelfoot Lake is also known for its large population of wintering bald eagles, usually numbering between 100 and 200 each year. The refuge also supports large numbers of wintering ducks and geese.
Most of the refuge, except for the observation decks, is closed to the public during certain winter months to protect waterfowl; check with the refuge for closure dates.
There are environmental education programs available.
