The Hatchie refuge occupies 11,556 acres along the Hatchie Scenic River, three miles south of Brownsville, Tenn. The refuge, established in 1964, was acquired primarily to provide habitat for migrating and wintering waterfowl.
The Hatchie River is the last unchannelized river of its type in the Lower Mississippi River Valley and still functions under near normal wetland cycles. Nearly 90 percent of the refuge lies within the floodplain of the Hatchie. The refuge contains about 9,400 acres of bottomland hardwoods and are flooded by headwater flows of the river.
More than 200 species of birds, 50 species of mammals and myriad reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates make their living in the varied habitats of the Hatchie refuge.
