Fur traders planted their gardens on Farm Island to protect them from prairie fires and thieves. Though a causeway has connected the island to the mainland since 1934, the island's 1,800 acres remain wooded wilderness.
The recreation area, which includes the island and some mainland, has swimming beaches, a 90-site campground, cabins, picnic area and boat ramps on the mainland.
Paddle boats can be rented to explore the islands and bays that were once explored by Lewis and Clark.
Walleye, white bass and crappie are fished from the Lake Sharpe Reservoir on the Missouri River. There is a wheelchair-accessible fishing dock.
A network of hiking trails explore the island forest, where deer, small mammals and a large variety of birds live.
