Known for its clear waters and abundant fish, Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is a popular park for fishing, boating and swimming.
The 512-acre reservoir, created by damming the Vermillion River, has good populations of walleye, northern pike, crappie and bluegill. The recreation area has two boat ramps in its two campgrounds, which provide 66 sites and 62 electrical campsites. A fishing dock is wheelchair-accessible.
Other water sports are popular too, from sailing to waterskiing. Swimmers take the plunge from a 400-foot swimming beach.
Bird-watching is especially good, with 175 different species reported in the area.
In fall, hunters use the park as a base to pursue waterfowl and upland game in nearby areas.
