Pelicans were once so numerous here that the lake was named for them. Today, Pelican Lake remains a favorite stopping place for white pelicans and other migrating waterfowl and a variety of shorebirds.
Much of the recreation area that sits on the lake's shores is prairie, and the park focuses many of its summer interpretive programs on the native grasses, wildflowers and wildlife of this unique habitat.
A new five-mile trail is open to mountain bicyclists, hikers and horseback riders. The park also has a self-guided three-quarter mile interpretive hiking trail with an observation tower.
Anglers, swimmers, boaters and water-skiers enjoy the 2,800-acre lake, where walleye, perch, northern pike and bullhead thrive.
Pheasant hunting is excellent in fall.
In winter, a warming house with wood-burning fireplace serves cross-country skiers, snowmobilers and ice fishermen.
