Located in the heart of South Dakota's glacial lakes region and fed by cool spring water, Pickerel is the state's deepest natural lake.
Pickerel Lake has long been recognized for its excellent fishing. Early Native Americans fished here and considered the 2,000-foot summit at the south end of the lake a sacred place.
White settlers also enjoyed the fishing, and they built a hotel to serve outdoor enthusiasts. Today, anglers fish year-round for for a variety of species, including walleye, rainbow trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass and, of course, pickerel.
The 368-acre recreation area has two facilities, one on the west side of the lake and the other on the east side. Both have modern campgrounds, picnic areas, swimming beaches and boat launching areas.
Birdwatchers come to view the more than 200 resident and migratory species.
In winter, ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiers are the dominant activities.
