Shadehill Recreation Area covers more than 2,000 scenic acres along the shoreline of 5,000-acre Shadehill Reservoir.
There are a number of unusual attractions to discover here, including colorful petrified trees, weighing 150 pounds per cubic foot. Children like to watch the prairie dogs scuttling about the park's 10-acre pairie dog town.
Mule and white-tailed deer and pronghorn antelope live in the forest, as do grouse, pheasants, partridge and waterfowl. Shadehill is known for its numbers and variety of birds, including a large flock of Canada geese and other waterfowl. Hunting is allowed in season.
The lake also attracts sailors, waterskiers, paddlers and swimmers. Anglers catch northern pike, walleyes, channel catfish and yellow perch.
The park has three camping cabins that sleep four each, a camping lodge that sleeps eight and 52 camping pads with electric hookups.
The area is located 14 miles south of Lemmon, off SD Hwy. 73.
