Bikers, hikers, horseback riders and cross-country skiers all enjoy this 109-mile recreation trail between Deadwood and Edgemont in the pine-studded Black Hills.
Construction of the trail, named for the late Gov. George S. Mickelson, began in 1991 and was completed in 1998. The trail winds through some of the most beautiful areas in the Black Hills. It passes over wooden trestles, through tunnels and past old mining and mill sites. It also passes near Crazy Horse Monument, a worthy side trip north of Custer. An annual trail trek is held the third week in September.
Only the 18-mile stretch of trail from Deadwood to DuMont is open for snowmobiling.
