Recreation opportunities abound on the 1.2 million acres of the Black Hills National Forest in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming.
There are more than 100 developed recreation sites that include camp and picnic grounds, swimming beaches, boat launches and scenic overlooks.
The forest contains Harney Peak, at 7,242 feet the highest point in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Several forest service trails lead to the peak, where a historic lookout tower offers panoramic views of South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming.
The area's popular attractions include Devils Tower National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Custer State Park, home of the country's largest buffalo herd.
The 13,605-acre Black Elk Wilderness, situated within the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, provides excellent hiking, backpacking and camping.
Hikers and backpackers enjoy the 111-mile Centennial Trail and the Flume or Lost Cabin national recreational trails.
