The main attraction of Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge is Lake Andes itself, a natural prairie lake, whose size and water supply depend entirely on the yearly run-off that empties into the lake.
The refuge is a resting and migrating area for waterfowl and huge flocks of ducks and geese can be seen in the spring and fall.
Foot travel is permitted, but use of motorcycles, jeeps, snowmobiles, and other motorized traffic is prohibited in order to protect wildlife habitat. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails and a picnic area. Hunting, trapping and fishing are permitted on Waterfowl Production Areas in compliance with State laws.
Lake Andes refuge also manages the Karl Mundt National Wildlife Refuge, which protects bald eagles and is closed to the public.
