The Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge is a 16,410-acre refuge that conserves a narrow basin on the northern edge of the Nebraska Sandhills.
Lacreek is home to nearly 400 trumpeter swans that nest on and around the refuge and adjacent Nebraska Sandhills, about 150 winter on the refuge. Large numbers of pelicans can also be seen regularly during the summer and a total of 281 bird species have been identified at Lacreek.
The refuge provides hunting for ring-necked pheasants, prairie grouse and white-tailed deer. The deer hunt is by muzzle-loader and archery only; interested hunters must apply for a state license.
Adjacent to the refuge is a new 2,200-acre state wildlife management area which offers big game, upland game and waterfowl hunting and fishing.
