This 9,000 square-mile wetland management district preserves rich wildlife habitat over an eight-county region.
The western portion of the district is in the Missouri Coteau and is comprised of intermediate- and short-grass prairie.
The James River Basin is a large valley drained by the James River. This area and the Dakota Lake Plain are covered by mixed tall-grass prairie and agricultural lands.
The Waterfowl Production Areas are wonderful places to observe wildlife in the spring, summer and fall. These marshes offer spectacular views of shorebirds, water birds, birds of prey and upland game.
The areas are open for wildlife observation, photography, hunting and trapping. Fishing is limited to just a few areas.
Non-toxic shot is required for hunting upland game and waterfowl.
