The Lake Andes district preserves important habitat for waterfowl and other birds in the southwestern portion of the Prairie Pothole region.
Thirteen waterfowl and 213 bird species nest in the district across 13 counties.
Two sites within the district offer environmental education programs.
The Scheffel Outdoor Classroom provides information on native grasses, trees and shrubs. A boardwalk trail leads students into wetland habitats for research and investigation.
The Atkins Wetland Interpretive Trail provides a 1.5-mile walk through prairie wetlands and upland habitat. Interpretive signs along the trail explain management techniques, identify wildlife and plants and detail the importance of wetlands.
Hunting for waterfowl, pheasant and deer is permitted throughout the district.
