The Huron district preserves 16,000 acres of waterfowl habitat in Beadle, Sanborn, Jerauld, Hand, Hyde, Hughes, Sully and Buffalo counties.
These areas are open year-round to many public activities, especially nature and wildlife viewing.
Native prairie grasses, wildflowers and other plants can be observed. During seasonal migrations, large numbers and diverse species of birds make the district popular among bird-watchers and photographers.
Hunting, trapping and fishing are permitted within the district seasonally.
Foot travel is permitted, but motorcycles, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles are prohibited to protect wildlife habitat.
The wetlands found in the district vary. The uplands are primarily grasslands. The mixture of upland cover and wetlands creates an area that supports many wildlife species.
