One of the nation's largest state parks, Custer contains 71,000 acres. It also boasts some of the Black Hills' most spectacular geography and one of the world's largest herds of bison.
Needles Highway winds for 14 miles among unusual rock formations and past 7,242-foot Harney Peak, the highest point between the Rockies and the Alps.
The park is a recreationist's paradise. Hikers have some 60 miles of trails, including a 22-mile stretch of the Black Hills Centennial Trail. Mountain bikers and horseback riders have access to the trail.
Anglers can look to the park's four stocked lakes and various trout streams. Because the park is an avian meeting ground between east and west, birdwatchers find an unusual diversity of species.
Park accommodations include four historic resorts, 350 campsites in seven areas, and backcountry camping in the French Creek Natural Area.
