Backpackers revel in the trailside hiking and camping available in this pristine wilderness park covering 3,346 acres.
Located in the 10,000-acre Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, this park skirts the Middle Saluda River, designated the state's first scenic river.
The park is an popular access point to the Foothills Hiking Trail.
There are 52 miles of trails, ranging from easy to strenuous, in the wilderness area. Trailside camping is allowed at 24 designated sites. Hikers must first register at park headquarters.
More than 400 species of plants, including rare and endangered species and state record trees, are also found here.
The park's Environmental Education Center offers nature exhibits and a lab area. Portions of the old Cleveland Fish Hatchery have been restored and are stocked with trout for observation only.
Visitors, however, can fish in the Middle Saluda and Matthews Creek for brook, spotted and rainbow trout.
