The largest ponderosa pine in Oregon lives in LaPine State Park. With a circumference of 326 inches and a height of 191 feet, it is one of the country's two largest trees.
New park features include five log cabins, three yurts and a log cabin style meeting hall. Eleven miles of trails offer year-round recreational fun.
The day-use area supports swimming, fishing for stocked rainbows and native German brown trout and picnicking. Dirt roads in the Fall River area of the 2,000-acre park are used by mountain bikers.
Campers find nearly 150 campsites and a trailer dump station. It's a good idea to reserve a site, especially during the summer. Campsites may be reserved, for an additional fee, from two days to nine months in advance.
Many visitors use the park as a base camp for exploring Orgeon's famous lava lands and the wilderness areas of the nearby Cascade Mountains.
