On Oregon's south coast near the California border, Harris Beach State Park offers camping, a little hiking and varied fishing opportunities.
Anglers fish the Chetco River, smaller streams and the Pacific. One can surf cast from the beach or join the locals on the jetty in town. Likely catches include Chinook and silver salmon, steelhead, ling cod, perch, flounder and snapper.
Campsites include 63 tent sites, 52 sites with water and electric hookups and 34 sites with water, electrical and sewer hookups. There are also six rental yurts and twelve hiker/biker campsites. One campsite and one yurt are wheelchair-accessible.
Campsites may be reserved, for an additional fee from two days to 9 months in advance.
The terrain combines sand beach, rugged coastal rocks and colorful native plants. Day users and campers can picnic, or hike to the beach and explore areas with interpretive displays.
The Harris Butte Trail leads to a scenic overlook that is a popular perch for watching migrating gray whales.
