One of several attractions on the Three Capes Scenic Loop between Tillamook and Pacific City, Cape Lookout State Park offers an intriguing mix of terrain.
Cape Lookout itself juts into the Pacific like a thorn. A sand spit, including the park's beach, points north, forming Netarts Bay. The park includes old-growth temperate rain forest and rugged basalt cliffs.
Stations along a quarter-mile nature trail illustrate a variety of rain-forest plants. A 2.4-mile hiking trail through a stand of Sitka spruce to the tip of Cape Lookout offers dramatic views. Also running through the park is a three-mile stretch of the Oregon Coastal Trail.
Campers are offered 13 yurt sites, 173 tent sites, one electrical site and 38 trailer spaces with hookups. Two campsites are accessible to the disabled. There are also group camping areas and a hiker-biker camp.
The park is on the Reservations Northwest system, through which campsites may be reserved, for an additional fee, from two days to nine months in advance.
Maritime history buffs should visit Cape Meares Lighthouse, administered by Cape Lookout State Park, about 11 miles north.
Anglers catch ocean perch from the beach and fish for trout and bass in nearby lakes.
Shorebirds, raptors and many other avian species attract many birdwatchers.
