Fishing, camping, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing take place in the Crooked River National Grassland, part of the Ochoco National Forest.
The grassland's headquarters in Madras were constructed during the 1930s for the Soil Conservation Service.
You can camp, fish, water ski, windsurf and view the birds at Haystack Reservoir. Largemouth bass, rainbow trout, catfish, kokanee and crappie are caught here. The best fishing is January through June.
Lake Billy Chinook, in the upper northwest section of the grassland, has a campground and marina.
A 20-mile section of the Deschutes River, designated wild and scenic, offers fishing, swimming and expert kayaking.
In the midst of central Oregon's high desert environment is a wetland of ponds and springs. The 1.5-mile Rimrock Springs Trail leads to two observation decks. One is wheelchair accessible. Songbirds, waterfowl, aquatic mammals, game birds, raptors, deer, antelope and coyote inhabit this area.
