The Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge protects and provides wintering habitat for the Canada goose. Other species of waterfowl, as well as herons, hawks, quail, shorebirds, mourning doves, woodpeckers, and a variety of songbirds, also frequent the area.
More than 30 species of mammals, including red fox and black-tailed deer, also make their home in Baskett Slough.
The refuge covers 2,493 acres of the Willamette Valley's oak-covered knolls and grass fields.
Wetlands on the refuge include Morgan Lake and marshes that skirt Baskett Slough.
Access to the refuge is limited between Oct. 1 and April 30 due to the winter waterfowl closure. One trail is open year-round.
