Rare plants, delicate flowers and a random mixture of sedimentary and volcanic rock that has been pushed, shoved and lifted over centuries offer visitors to Siskiyou National Forest a fascinating study in nature and geology.
Among the unusual plants that make this a botanist's paradise are the Kalmiopsis shrub, the Port Orford cedar, brewers weeping spruce and the cobra plant.
Portions of the Rogue River that flow through the forest are classified as federally protected wild and scenic riverways. Visitors can raft on the river's whitewater or take a jetboat ride on a gentler segment. Rafting also is offered on the Illinois River.
Visitors can also hike on the Rogue River Trail, explore the Redwood Nature Trail with its giant redwoods and Douglas firs and backpack in four wilderness areas.
The TTY phone number for the forest is 866-296-3823.
