The Rogue River begins its journey in the northeast corner of the forest that shares its name, churns through the narrows in the Rogue River Gorge and disappears into a volcanic hole at Natural Bridge.
To the west of the Rogue Valley are the narrow canyons and steep ridges of the Siskiyou Mountain Range and the headwaters of the Applegate River. Once home to several Native American Indian tribes, the area became "gold country" during the late 1800s. Remnants of mining activities can still be seen today.
The forest peaks at 9,495 feet on Mount McLoughlin, one of the major volcanic cones in the Oregon Cascades.
Hiking trails abound in the Sky Lakes Area, an enchanting region of 200 lakes shared with the Winema National Forest. Seven sky-blue lakes are clustered together in the Seven Lakes Basin.
You can explore gold mining history on the Gin Lin Interpretive Trail and see the historic Klamath American Indian berry gathering area at Huckleberry Mountain.
